Brent, one of my early memories as a child was staying awake until your dad (my older brother) would come home from a date or ball game. We had a new table radio and sometimes he would take it to his bedroom where we both slept. He would turn it to the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Network and listen to Harry Caray as he gave play-by-play of a nighttime game. TT didn’t do that many times, but once we pulled the covers over our heads, stuck the radio inside with us, and two Cardinal pals from Timber HIll finished out a memorable game. That’s no big deal in today’s world as our smart phones, TVs and computers provide full-color coverage of everything imaginable. But at that time, we’d only had electricity for about a year, and that brand new radio was cutting edge technology for the Taylor home. So, I digress — just a thought triggered by your gravel baseball tale which, by the way, was excellent.

  It’s always great to here those stories that resonate across generations. I loved the crackle of AM radio late at night. Cards baseball, news reports on the hour with the lead in that sounded like a large lozenge dropping into a glass of water. Things seemed more dramatic and important and rare coming over the radio in a world with fewer channels and fewer devices. Thanks for reading…means a lot coming from a pro like you.

  Do you remember where I put my baseball that I caught in the Astrodome off Jesus Alou’s bat? I haven’t been able to find it for years. And my Boston Album from 1977?

Mr. Brent,
Thanks for sharing these incredible memories. I think most young boys and even some young girls have had someone or some team they looked up to and pretended to be in their backyard wonderlands. For me it was Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Albert Pujols, Jim Edmonds, Octavio Dotel, Roger Clemens… Your absolutely right that these memories stick in our minds forever even when those heroes have gone. The way you wrote it took me back to my own backyard world series’. Thanks for the reminder of how the game was meant to be played and how great those days in the backyard really were.

  Glad you enjoyed the post. Jenna said your version of backyard ball was batting golf balls into the woods. I hit a few of those myself with a bat. Think I even hit a few off of Petit Jean mountain once, but that’s another story altogether.
  
  Looking forward to seeing you play baseball sometime. I could have written an entire post on how I pitched entire games pretending to be Bob Gibson throwing a rubber baseball against the brick wall of our house with a square strike zone drawn on the wall with a sandstone rock as the chalk.
